This finding corroborates with a recent survey from Horowitz Research in which roughly half of subscribers didn’t know what programs were on what SVOD platform. Nielsen reports 46% of audiences have expressed some frustration in locating content. With so much compelling content, subscribers have expressed some difficulty in navigating the myriad of choices. By comparison, the FCC reports that households that subscribe to cable pay an average of $116 per month. Nielsen also found roughly half of SVOD subscribers pay $20 or more each month. Adults 35 to 49 are more likely to subscribe to five or more SVOD providers. By comparison, in 2019 only 3% of SVOD subscribers had five or more services. Nielsen reports 57% of SVOD subscribers pay for at least three services, with 17% subscribing to five or more.
With an estimated 200 streaming providers and several high-profile launches since 2019, viewers are subscribing to more streaming providers. According to the Motion Picture Association’s 2021 THEME Report, the number of original programs online has doubled from 347 in 2019 to 693 in 2021. In December 2019 there were 646,000 unique titles on traditional television and streaming providers to over 817,000 unique titles in February 2022, with many programs offering hundreds of episodes.
